# Sanctions screening false-positives: AI triage, governed releases, full audit

FinTech ops teams often get stuck in a bad place with sanctions screening:

- The screening engine throws **lots of false positives**.
- Analysts do manual research, paste notes into tickets/spreadsheets, and then someone “just releases” the payment.
- The _decision_ might be reasonable, but the **execution is inconsistent** , and the **audit trail is fragmented**.

This is exactly where “AI suggests, Autom Mate executes under control” matters.

## The real problem (ops + compliance)

- **False positives create a throughput bottleneck** : every alert pauses the payment flow and forces manual verification. ([descartes.com](https://www.descartes.com/resources/knowledge-center/best-practices-and-tools-reducing-false-positives-ofac-sanctions?utm_source=openai))
- **AI-only auto-release is risky** : LLMs can hallucinate, misread entity context, or be prompt-injected via case notes / attachments.
- **Manual release is also risky** : inconsistent steps, missing evidence, and weak change control.

## Proposed pattern: AI triage + deterministic executio Mate can orchestrate the end-to-end workflow with:

- eve/webhook/email/file)
- validation + conditional logic in the workflow engine
- apexecution
- error handling / retries / exception routing
- monitoring + execution logs + auditability

## End-to-end workflow (copyable)

### 1) Trigger

- **Trigger:** “Sanctions alert created” from your screening/case tool.
  - Integration label: **REST/HTTP/Webhook action** (receiveate)

### 2) Validation (hard gates before any AI)

- Validate required fields exist:
  - payment\_id, amount, currency, beneficiary name, bank identifiers, alert\_reason, match\_score

- Enforce policy thresholds:
  - if amount \> X or match\_score \> Y → **must be human-approved**
  - if beneficiary country in high-risk list → **must be compliance-approved**

- Integration label: **Autom Mate library** (Transforms / validation + conditional loage (suggestion only)
- AI produces:
  - recommended disposition: _false positive / needs more info / likely true match_
  - a checklist of missing evidence
  - a draft case narrative (what was checked, why it’s likely not a match)

- Guardrail: AI output is **non-executing** and cannot directly release funds.
- Integration label: **Autom Mate library** (AI actions / Agent Composer governed agent)

### 4) Approvals (human or policy-based)

- Route to the right approver based on policy:
  - low-risk false-positive suggestion → 1 compliance approver
  - higher-risk → 2-person review (four-eyes)

- Approver receives a structured packet:
  - original alert payload
  - AI recommendation + confidence
  - required evidence checklist
  - “Release” vs “Hold” decision buttons

- Integration label: **REST/HTTP/Webhook action** (send approval request to your ticketing/chat system if needed) + Autom Mate governance/audit logging

### 5) Deterministic execution (the only place money moves)

If approved:

- **Step A:** Update sanctions case status to “Cleared” with approver identity + timestamp
  - Integration label: **REST/HTTP/Webhook action**

- **Step B:** Release payment / remove hold in payment ops system
  - Integration label: **REST/HTTP/Webhook action**

- **Step C:** Write an immutable audit record (case\_id, payment\_id, approver, policy version, AI summary hash)
  - Integration label: **Autom Mate platform logging/audit trail**

If rejected:

- Keep hold, escalate, and open an investigation task.

### 6) Logging / audit trail (end-to-end)

Autom Mate should log:

- trigger payload (redacted where needed)
- validation results
- AI output (stored as advisory)
- approval decision + who approved
- exact actions executed + responses
- Autom version executed (for change traceability)
  - Integration label: **Autom Mate monitoring + execution logs**

### 7) Exception handling / rollback

- If “release payment” succeeds but “update case” fails:
  - create an exception task and **re-try** update with backoff
  - if still failing, execute a compensating action: re-apply hold (if supported) or flag for urgent manual action

- If webhook payload is malformed:
  - quarantine the event, alert ops, and do not proceed

- Integration label: **Autom Mate error handling and exception management**

## Why AI alone is risky here

- Sanctions decisions are high-stakes; a model can be confidently wrong.
- Even if the decision is right, **exetent** (same steps, same evidence, same approvals).

Autom Mate’s role is to ensure:

- AI is constrained by policies/guardrails
- approvals are enforced before any release
- execution is deterministic and fully logged

## Two mini examples

### Example 1: “Obvious false positive” name collision

- Alert: “JOHN SMITH” matches a sanctions list name, low match score.
- AI suggests: false positive; requests DOB +alyst attaches evidence → Approver clicks **Release**.
- Autom Mate executes release + writes audit log.

### Example 2: “High-risk corridor” requires four-eyes

- Alert: medium match score + high-risk country.
- Policy forces 2 approvals.
- First approver requests more info → Autom Mate routes back, pauses execution.
- After evidence added, second approver signs off → deterministic release.

## Discussion questions

- Where do you want the hard line: _which sanctions alerts are ever eligible for auto-closure_ vs always requiring human approval?
- What’s your preferred “compensating control” if a downstream system fails mid-flight (re-hold vs manual escalation)?
