Sanctions false positives: AI triage, governed releases, full audit

The problem: sanctions false-positives create a “casework backlog” (and the actions don’t happen)

Many fintech teams have a decent sanctions screening engine, but the operational workflow around false positives is still manual:

  • Alerts land in one system (screening tool / risk engine)
  • Analysts investigate in spreadsheets + email/Slack
  • Approvals happen in chat (or not at all)
  • The actual action (release payment / keep hold / offboard customer / file SAR escalation) is executed later, inconsistently, and sometimes without a clean audit trail

This is where AI can help triage and draft, but AI alone is risky:

  • A model can hallucinate evidence, misread policy thresholds, or “decide” to release a payment without the required approvals
  • Regulators and auditors care about who approved what, when, and based on which evidence

The pattern that works in practice is:

  • AI suggests (summaries, recommended disposition, evidence checklist)

Proposed governed workflow (end-to-end)

1) Trigger

  • Trigger: New sanctions screening alert (or “payment placed on hold due to sanctions match”) arrives.
  • Integration: REST/HTTP/Webhook action (screening tool → Autom Mate webhook)

2) Validation (policy + data completeness)

  • Validate required fields exist before any action:
    • customer_id / payment_id
    • match score + list source
    • name + DOB/address (if available)
    • current risk tier
  • Enforce deterministic rules:
    • If risk tier is “high” OR match score above threshold → force enhanced review path
    • If missing key identifiers → request enrichment before review
  • Integration:
    • REST/HTTP/Webhook action (fetch customer/payment context from internal systems)

3) AI-assisted triage (suggestion only)

  • AI produces:
    • a short case summary
    • a checklist of missing evidence
    • a recommended disposition: likely false positive vs needs escalation
  • Guardrail: AI output is never allowed to directly release funds or close the alert.

4) Approvals (human or policy-based)

  • Route to the right approver group based on:
    • risk tier
    • amount threshold
    • jurisdiction
  • Require explicit approval for:
    • releasing a held payment
    • whitelisting/false-hit list updates
    • closing the alert as false positive
  • Integration:
